Welcome!

I am Shivvrat Arya (Shiv), an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT).

My research focuses on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, with emphasis on:

  • Neuro-symbolic AI – integrating formal models with neural networks
  • Probabilistic Reasoning & Inference – scalable algorithms for graphical models
  • Explainable AI – interpretable models supporting tractable reasoning
  • Combinatorial Optimization – efficient methods for NP-hard problems
  • Applications – computer vision and natural language processing

The overarching goal of my work is to build transparent, trustworthy AI systems that combine structured domain knowledge with data-driven learning.

Some highlights of my research contributions include:

  • Developing novel neural inference methods for probabilistic models
  • Creating explainable approaches to activity and video understanding
  • Building real-time AR task guidance systems for complex physical tasks
  • Co-developing CaptainCook4D, an egocentric 4D dataset for procedural task understanding
  • Publishing award-winning papers and spotlight/oral presentations at leading AI/ML conferences

📢 Currently recruiting highly motivated PhD students (Spring & Fall 2026) with RA/TA funding, as well as undergraduate and master’s students for research projects. 🤝 I am also open to collaborations in AI, ML, and their applications in vision and language.
