There are many C54 lines without d4. ECO version 4 (old paper copy) has 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. c3 Nf6 as the start of the classification (C53 is lines without .. Nf6). Then lines C54/2 through C54/5 have d4, and the rest of the lines have 5. d3. This is also consistent with how ChessBase does classification. |
