a multicolored quilt sitting on top of a couch

A Great Pattern for Recycling Mens Shirts! A beautiful array of plaids make a stunning quilt. Men will love this quilt and most women will too. Soften the colors for a quilt anyone will enjoy. The black center squares and border set off the vibrant prints beautifully. However, another color may work better with your …

a person holding up a quilt on the porch

My next completion is "Monolith" This quilt measures 51" by 62". The prints are from the "Parson Gray" line. I was drawn to these by the masculine feel and the muted, sophisticated colors. I had them together with a light color of the collection, but it just felt too "matched". I liked it, but didn't love it. Then I saw the 3 yd cut of gray/blue batik blender and they all played so nicely together. I started by sewing half-square triangles. I wanted to keep the quilt more masculine in feel…

a blanket is hanging on the side of a wooden fence in front of some plants

Every year, my brothers and I participate in a Christmas gift rotation. This year, I have my little brother, Mikey. I really felt like I needed to do something extra special for him–poor guy lost everything in an apartment fire a couple years ago and is still replacing items. One of those items lost was a quilt my mom made for him. Even though I know there’s no way I can replace the sentiment he felt about that quilt, I thought a new one might be good anyway. Thankfully, I had all year to…

a blue and brown quilt is hanging on the side of a building with trees in the background

When I made my list of quilts I hoped to finish this year, this quilt wasn't even on it. I guess I just forgot to add it so I'll just call it a bonus quilt. 😉 A few years ago, I stopped at Front Porch Quilts in Benjamin, Texas and one of the things I bought was this Layer Cake I loved that little quilt shop, but we ran into the owner at a quilt show in Dimmit last month and she said she closed the shop in January. Her business partner had some health issues and the shop was just too much…

a man is quilting a t - shirt quilt with the words, how to sew

Leaving a quilt unfinished is like shaving only half your moustache. It’s like mixing up cookie dough and never baking the cookies. It’s like planting an apple tree and letting the apples fall to the ground unpicked. What a waste! If you’re going to spend the time and effort to construct an awesome quilt top, do yourself a huge favor and finish it so it can be used and enjoyed! This week I’m demonstrating how to baste and quilt a t-shirt quilt. (You can learn how to make the quilt top HERE.)…

two quilts hanging on clothes pins in the woods with trees and grass behind them

The original post for these quilts was just over two years ago. This set of mini-quilts was made for a family of five siblings to remember their father. I've received several questions about reproducing the design for the first and third quilts so thought I'd share that information here so that you can make one, too. One frequent question is about how to size the finished quilt to be bigger or smaller. Both of these designs are based on an eight block by eight block grid. In other words…

a patchwork quilt hanging on a clothes line in front of some trees and grass

I started this quilt simply to use up a bag of flannel scraps that has been taking up space in my sewing room closet. I cut as many 6" squares as I could and then put them together in a Disappearing 9-Patch pattern. Daughter-in-law #2 happened to ask what I was working on one day, so I snapped a photo for her. She immediately questioned who it was for and when I told her it wasn't for anyone she said that she was putting it on her Christmas list! I couldn't ignore her request, so I got it…
