How to use oxides on clay. Oxides are another way to decorate your ceramics. They have a finish all of their own but can also be layered with underglazes, stains and glazes to make a huge variety of finishes. I love oxides with their versatility. They have a range of colours and can be applied directly in different ways to give different effects as well as being used under and over glaze or in slips to add colour. This video is a run down of how I use them in the studio. Click to watch

three green and white cups sitting next to each other

These are the pieces from my last post. They have now been glazed and covered in oxides to help create an decayed surface, inspired by erosion from the ocean. Generally, I'm really happy with these results. Some need a bit of refinement, especially with the (bright blue) cobalt oxide. there are many different types of tiles on the table

Some of the results from the color testing lab I’ve done a month or so ago. I’ve used 6-8 different oxides and colorants in various proportions and combinations. I surprisingly loved cobalt (blue)! Otherwise I got of greens and browns which is both great and not - on the one hand, they’re all nature-inspired, on the other hand I was hoping for more interesting colors. But…maybe stains are my friends instead of oxides! I think the most exciting part of this color test is the green that…
