The easiest entry point for black and white photography is with your digital camera or smartphone. It is probably best to shoot with black and white in mind, but you can just as easily convert color images later. Let's start our discussion by looking at the merits of both color and black and white.

The main light is just above the frame - 22" beauty dish with PCB Einstein Silver reflector beneath the model for extra pop and additional catch-lights in her eyes Two Alien Bees B160 lights into reflective umbrellas onto the white seamless paper for background. I'm looking to do some high key portraits. From what I have read on Photo.net this seems like a reasonable setup but thought I would solicit feedback...

High Key is a term to describe images that are bright and contain little to no shadow. The term comes from the early days of broadcast television when scenes with higher contrast were not reproduced well. To make a scene that was easier to properly show on screen, the ratio between the key and fill lights was minimized. It is also sometimes used to describe photos and the photographic style that is simply bright, often with an overexposed background.
