Glorfindel is an elf from the Noldor who participated in the Exodus of his people from Aman on the side of the clan of Fingolfin . In the First Age , he lived in the secret city of Gondolin , where he served King Turgon as an adviser and military leader, leading the House of the Golden Flower - one of the twelve small Houses of the city into which Gondolindrim was divided .

Glorfindel died during the siege of Gondolin by the forces of the Dark Lord Morgoth , fighting a Balrog and at the cost of his own life protecting the surviving inhabitants of Gondolin, among whom was little Earendil , the son of Princess Idril , daughter of Turgon. Later, as a reward for his self-sacrifice, at the behest of the Valar , he returned to Middle-earth again in the Second Age to help King Gil-galad in the fight against Sauron . After the death of Gil-galad, Glorfindel became a warlord of Rivendell in the service of Elrond .
