Painting Fantasy Miniatures + Asgard Barbarian

BP12 Haxx Ragged
Back in April I began sculpting miniatures and I haven't been at the painting table since. In fact, this Asgard Barbarian from the fabled Jes Goodwin collection was painted before then and the photos have been peacefully resting in my phone. So, before I clear some space on my memory card, here they are.

Now that looks like the sort of fellow you might encounter in a Fighting Fantasy game book, or a game of Dungeons & Dragons. I expect he will be a fine figure for my character Lucky Brolt in the current Dungeon Crawl Classics campaign that Lewis is running.

These are the other Jes Goodwin miniatures I have painted from the Asgard Barbarian range:

Barbarian Personalities

BP1 Clonar Sternbrow
BP3 Kern the Reaver
BP7 Arflane the Archer
BP8 Aurock Storrirkin
BP9 Skai Wolfbane
BP10 Alaric Mancleaver
BP11 Karl Two Cuts

The miniatures missing from this collection are Mad Rollo, Koth Beasthelm, Taran Firedaughter and Will Skegling. I would like to thank my good friend Mark Vuletich for giving these to me. I thoroughly enjoyed painting them!

BP stands for Barbarian Personalities and these are the original miniatures released in the mid-eighties by Asgard.  The complete list is:

BP1 Clonar Sternbrow
BP2 Taran Firedaughter
BP3 Kern the Reaver
BP4 Koth Beasthelm
BP5 Mad Rollo
BP6 Will Skegling
BP7 Arflane the Archer
BP8 Aurock Storrirkin
BP9 Skai Wolfbane
BP10 Alaric Mancleaver
BP11 Karl Two Cuts
BP12 Haxx the Ragged

If you can'take find these in a garage sale or on ebay, you can buy the new castings from Viking Forge or Alternative Armies. For me though, eight is enough!

God bless you and enjoy your week.

Sculpting Fantasy Miniatures + Yeoman Knight

Sir Theobald.
Thanks to daylight savings, I had an extra hour up my sleeve this morning. What to do with daylight? Well, I finished the sculpt I started yesterday. You can see the step by step photos in my previous post here.

There were some challenges with using Tamiya putty but I don't have any Green Stuff or Milliput, so the old adage "use what you have" applied. Apparently Sculpty is the latest rage? Anyway, apart from some experiments with Fimo in my youth, this is my first miniature sculpting experience.

I have altered and converted miniatures before and have often sculpted terrain elements onto bases. This is the first time I have made a miniature from scratch, beginning with a wire frame and sculpting everything from head to toe.

I used Tamiya Epoxy Putty. It is fairly sticky at first and drys quick. I find it easy to do hair with it and harder to do everything else. The sword was especially troublesome. Other areas came together surprisingly well.

I am pleased with the result. I wouldn't have thought about giving it a go if it weren't for Jason Fairclough and his Wasteman fantasy heartbreaker: Yeoman. Seeing his sculpts took me back to a time when Fighting Fantasy, Dungeons & Dragons and all manner of role-playing and war games inspired me to paint miniatures.

Thirty years on and it's still a fun hobby.

Sir Theobald is similar to the classic Citadel miniatures in my collection. He certainly has plenty of character. I enjoyed creating this knight immensely. So much so, that I am tempted to sculpt another one.

God's peace to you and may you have a blessed week.

Dwarf Lords of Legend + Bugman's Rangers

Dwarf Lords of Legend.
This Painting Table Saturday I have the last two Dwarf Lords of Legend and I finished flocking Bugman's Dwarf Rangers. It's all classic eighties Citadel Miniatures this week.

Bugman's Rangers.

My original box of Bugman's Dwarf Rangers had 17 miniatures; Command, Standard Bearer, Musician and Champion models plus 13 Troopers. However, I dislike painting miniatures that are exactly the same. Because the troops were made up of only four different sculpts (head variants), I sold the remainder. I took some creative licence with the shields and livery also.

My Bugman's Dwarf Rangers box.

The back of the box tells the story of a grizzled stranger bringing a cart load of ale to the Dwarfhold Karak-Varn as a gift for the King. This was many years since the sacking of Bugman's Brewery by goblins. Joseph Bugman was a name 'half forgotten and wreathed in legend'. Upon tasting the brew, the Dwarf King recognised the Master Brewer and onetime Ranger Captain.

'Bugman's Dwarf Rangers were re-formed at Karak-Varn, and his reputation and his brewing skills brought Dwarves from miles around flocking to his banner. The expedition to reconquer and re-establish Bugman's Brewery took on the proportions of a holy war.'

As for the Dwarf Lords of Legend, I get the feeling The Baron and Lastro Lupintal are somehow connected. The former fought against a vampire and the latter was afflicted by lycanthropy. At least, that's what I made out of their one-line back story.

Lastro Lupintal.

The Baron.

09. King Gorrin, Slayed Gorbald the Gruesome greenskin at the battle of Drakkaz-Snor.
10. Borax Bloodaxe, amassed a fortune that required 5 vaults to store.
11. The Baron, fought against the despicable Count Horlichs of Averland.
12. Throbin Death-eye, axe polished in blood and a gaze that was said to slay with a glance.
13. Lastro Lupintal, cursed to howl at every full moon by a Norscan witch.
14. Kimril Giant Slayer, first slayer and bested the Giant twins Thunderguts and Stormbelly.
15. Uther, vowed to slay 100 Skaven every 7th day.
16. Angus, fell at Klumti Pass crushed by the bodies of his dead foes.

God bless you and have some fun this week!

Dwarf Lords of Legend + Asgard Barbarians

Painting Table Saturday.
Thanks to Nick with his challenge to paint a mini each week in 2016, my painting table is getting some attention again. This Saturday I have finished two miniatures.

The first is Angus, one of the fabled Dwarf Lords of Legend. He's one of eight Citadel miniatures, sculpted by the legendary Perry twins, Alan and Michael. I have painted them all now except The Baron and Lastro Lupintal.

The second miniature is also a classic mid-eighties sculpt. An Asgard Barbarian, Karl Two Cuts. I have most of this Jes Goodwin collection but so far I have only painted Arflane the Archer. I have some work ahead of me! These miniatures have now been re-released by Alternate Armies, so I may pick up the few I am missing.

Dwarf Lords of Legend + 40k Squats

Warhammer Dwarfs.
Here is my painting table from last Saturday. As you can see it's a dwarf party, with Warhammer Lords of Legend and 40k Squats. These are classic Citadel miniatures and full of character. The tartan may prove to be a challenge. I especially like the dwarf musician (front row second from the left), with his shoulder mounted boom box.

God bless you and have an awesome weekend.

PTS 100 + 40k Lamenters + Chaos Space Marines

Adventure Time!
Here is Painting Table Saturday 100. I didn't begin at number 1. My first post for PTS being number 15 back in February 2014. I would like to thank Sofie for letting me join the community which has inspired me to keep painting and also share my miniature hobby with the world at large. I continue to enjoy painting, a pastime that began with a Grenadier blister pack of three Fantasy Lord fighters in the 1980's.

I have given some Chaos Space Marines new helmets, gathered from some Chaos Knights. The Lamenters are now done. They were a challenge. The original paint job by Jamie (the previous owner) was great, especially the chequy. I would have left them untouched if it weren't for a suggestion from Lewis to give them Jet Packs. An Ebay purchase supplied them with some old metal packs, already painted yellow. A different yellow to the marines power armour. Some subtle washes with Army Painter soft tone and highlighting with Flash Git yellow helped make the upgrade look more natural.

I changed some poses, added a skull here and an arm there, as well as repainting minor details on the armour. Plastic miniatures are easy to convert. However, with the new metal Jet Packs making the space marines top-heavy, washers were required to help balance them. One of them needed lead 'rocks'.

Level One.

God be with you and have a blessed week.
