This Classical Style building was completed on Wall Street in lower Manhattan in 1842 as the United States Custom House. It was built on the site of the old Federal Hall. At this site on April 30, 1789, George Washington was inaugurated as the first United States President. The statue commemorates his inauguration. Federal Hall, located at 26 Wall Street in New York City, was the first capitol of the United States of America and the site of George Washington’s first inauguration in 1789. It is also the place where the United States Bill of Rights was passed. The original building was demolished in the nineteenth century and replaced by the current structure.

Towering over the lobby of Federal Hall is a 40-foot sculptural facade of a canal house like those that would have been found in 17th century New York.
