For most of its 32 years, the “Allah” in "Garden of Allah Hotel" was spelled with an “h” but when the hotel opened, it was known as the Garden of Alla because the original owner was Alla Nazimova. That spelling didn’t last long so it’s rare to come across an advertisement using the original spelling. This ad comes from the June 11, 1927 of “Film Spectator” magazine, and interestingly it features the swimming pool around which many an outrageous cocktail party unfolded.

This photo was also used as cover of The Garden of Allah, an account of the hotel’s history written by Hollywood gossip columnist, Sheilah Graham, who spent some time there while dating Garden of Allah resident F. Scott Fitzgerald in the mid-to-late 1930s.

In 1926, Broadway star Alla Nazimova transformed her West Hollywood estate into the Garden of Allah Hotel, which also drew the likes of Greta Garbo, Laurence Olivier and the Marx brothers.
