Dev Blog #10 - Replay System - Technical Rundown

Welcome everyone!

Today, we have another developer blog post for you. This time about the technical side of the Replay System. We will go into detail about how we record games at scale without any observable performance impact. As of now, we record more than 12,000,000 recordings per week. But before we get started, there are a few random things we’d like to clear up.
  • You don’t need access to the Replay System for hackers to get banned. Using /report will trigger a variety of internal systems for us to then investigate your report with the most possible information. One of them being the Replay System. When our staff investigates normal reports, they can check the Replays from the accused player. You do not need to report them through the Replay System.
  • We want to encourage you to report any bugs you find in the bugs section, that’s the best way to get bugs fixed.
  • Why don’t we just record all sent and received packets to and from players? Because that would be far too much data to store. Instead, our current solution allows us to store roughly four Bed Wars games in the size of an average mobile phone image. Aside from size, it would also cause issues with per-client behavior, e.g. when we change the name of an ArmorStand differently for every player. What should we then show in the replay? What about client actions (like breaking blocks) that we then deny on the server? What about inefficiencies in the Minecraft protocol? Our current design has proven to be a very good approach to systematically solving these problems.
  • Be wary that the current state of the Replay System has gone through more than just a few months of development and we didn’t just come up with everything we will talk about the first try. Everything we will go into detail is how it currently works. Not what we had before, not what we have planned. We are going to focus on the barebone details on the recording and replaying, not the features built around it.

Bed Wars & SkyWars Map Rotation (November 2nd, 2020)

nov-map-rotations-forums (1).png
Hello there! Today we are excited to bring you another refreshing set of map rotations for Bed Wars and SkyWars to keep things interesting.

Thank you for all the map feedback you continue to provide each rotation! We aim to make the game as enjoyable as possible while ensuring everyone can have fun. Your feedback has been and will continue to be an essential part of the process.

We understand that some of you will be disappointed to see some maps leave rotation. Unfortunately, there is a limit as to the number of maps that we can have active at one time. This doesn't mean they are gone forever though! Just like with this rotation, we will be returning previously removed maps to the map pool in the future.

We hope you enjoy these new and returning maps! Without further ado, let's get to the rotations!
