Hey everyone,
As many of you are already aware, we carried out some important maintenance today to apply some crucial updates. Specifically, this included updating XenForo - the forum software we're using - from version
1.5 to 2.1, and getting some of our most important features updated to be compatible with it.
Those with a keen eye will no doubt have noticed some of the changes and improvements, but you can find a full list of features introduced by XenForo 2.0 here:
https://xenforo.com/community/threads/whats-new-in-xenforo-2-0.133426/
The additional jump from XenForo 2.0 to 2.1 also brings many features and changes, including some behind the scenes improvements, which you can read about here:
https://xenforo.com/community/threads/welcome-to-xenforo-2-1-assorted-improvements.155901/
We took this chance to upgrade some of the services the website runs on to make sure we're using versions with long term support (which ensures we're eligible for security fixes and performance/stability improvements).
You may also notice that some of our custom features, such as the leaderboards, are still under maintenance. This is because they require more work to make them compatible with the new XenForo version - but don't worry, they're not being forgotten! They will be updated and re-enabled in the coming weeks.
Thanks for your patience during the downtime and happy foruming
UPDATE:
We have been working on fixing some of the more critical issues that have come up. This migration is a major change, so some features may have issues or are missing entirely. Our goal is to get back any missing features, do bug fixes and eventually fix the visual aspects so it looks more like it used to. This will take some time, so please be patient as we work on this going forward.
If you find any bugs or missing features, please open a bug report at
http://hypixel.net/bugs! Or if you have feedback about anything that's new, feel free to make a thread at
http://hypixel.net/feedback.
Hey all,
I know some of you are confused about the website upgrade and I want to explain a few things that were not clear in the first post that we made.
First of all, this is a forum software update we had to do, not wanted, for security and performance reasons. Our goal is to
get closer to what it used to look while keeping the good stuff. Xenforo (the software) decided to discontinue security updates a few months ago and since then we have been in a bit of a panic mode to get us up to date.
- Missing features: As you might understand, our forum ran a lot of custom features like leaderboards, guilds, profiles, ratings and so on. The task to upgrade the actual software was colossal and yes, we did try to find help to speed up the process but it was not very successful. Many other forums were in the same situation that we were in, so our hiring opportunities were limited.
- Visually: Yep, some stuff looks weird and even horrible in some places. This will get improved and our goal is to get somewhere to what we had before. However, we also want to keep the good stuff as well.
- New features: There are quite a bit of new features that come with this upgrade, it's going to be super nice for the future of the website. I know right now some of you might just see the bad visual stuff, but to be fair, the visual stuff is the easy part of it all. Features, on the other hand, are much more complicated and now that we are up to date, we can actually shop for plugins and such from the Xenforo community.
- Performances: In the next few days it will be a bit all over the place as we are testing things, however from what we have seen so far it's night and day. The website used to crash at least once a day and was having a lot of issues at peak. Now the website machines are breathing super well, this will allow us to add features without the fear of slowing down the website.
- Bugs: There will be bugs, there are bugs. Please report them - you should also report visual weird stuff http://hypixel.net/bugs
- Future: Short term our goal is to fix, improve visuals and feature-complete the website. Long term our goal is to form a dedicated team of web developers to bring to life some crazy ideas that we have. Reality is, we have much more control over the website than we have over the Minecraft client, so this allows us to do stuff that is exciting. I don't want to give examples right now to over-promise, we still have a lot of work to do and a team to build, but I'm sure you guys are creative enough to come up with ideas!
Thank you all for your patience and apologies if you are feeling not great with this new upgrade. We hear you and we are working on it!
That being said, I hope you are all doing well and stay safe!
Cheers,
Simon
