someone is painting on the ground with plastic wrap around their legs and hand holding a paintbrush

Acrylic skins are made with acrylic paint and gel medium. Why not just mix the paint and gel medium on your journal page? Because creating a skin is more versatile. The skin can be cut, stamped, pr…

someone is holding their hand in front of a piece of art that has been drawn on it

(journal spread with transparent acrylic skins, white on the left and black on the top right) A few months ago, I saw this brilliant video by Jane Davies, in which she demonstrated a technique for creating transparent acrylic skins. Go watch it, I'll wait. Genius, right? But naturally, I had to change things up, modify a few steps, and generally make the technique work better for me in my studio. It's those tweaks that I'll be demo'ing in this blog post. For those of you who are unable to…

two hands in blue gloves are painting something yellow

Magdalena M on Instagram: "You are left with some leftover paint? Great ! Acrylic skin refers to a technique in painting where acrylic paint is spread thinly on a non-stick surface, such as plastic or silicone, and allowed to dry. Once dry, the paint forms a flexible sheet or "skin" that can be peeled off and manipulated. It can be used to create textured elements or add layers to their paintings, as they can be cut, torn, or adhered to the canvas in various ways to achieve different…

a painting with acrylic skins is shown in red, blue and yellow

Painting with acrylic skins is a fun and versatile technique. I think about it as something between collage and painting as you prepare skins to be added to your painting once they had time to dry, and you can place them, cut them, stretch them, overlap them a bit as you would when working with collage.

a hand is holding onto a piece of art that looks like liquid paint on blue paper

What are acrylic skins? Acrylic skins are essentially the dried paint that is left over from using acrylic paint. The plastic-like consistency of acrylic paint lends itself to making “skins” that can be peeled from plastic containers in sheets. I always found it cathartic to peel the dried acrylic paint from my plastic pallet. Pour painters can utilize the drippings from their pour painting by collecting the drips in a plastic pour box or from silicone mats. When dried, simply peel…

a person holding up a piece of art with the words tip of the day on it

Adele Sypesteyn - Artist and Abstract Art Teacher on Instagram: "Tip of the day today…. How to easily take an acrylic skin off of my palette paper. I always save my paper palettes, let them dry and then go over the top with gloss or matte gel. Instead of pulling the skin off the top, try flipping it over and pull the palette paper instead. Much more effective. SAVE this post to come back to when you want to try this."

the cover of what else can you do using skin's to embellish pours

I love pouring. It is the most satisfying medium I’ve worked with in a long time. The total surprise of what the outcome will be, is what I like best. Oh, and don’t forget about instant gratification. That is almost better than, well…you know. Like many of you, I’ve done hundreds of paintings and not
