Yeise (yessi) zinnia breeder on Instagram: "Don’t buy the same seeds twice! Self pollination is a great way to keep the same colors or forms from the blooms you like.
Here’s how to self pollinate a zinnia:
Take pollen from the pollen florets (fuzzy yellow starfish) and apply it to the stigmas (y shaped tendrils) on the same bloom or plant. Use an organza bag to cover the bloom to prevent cross pollination by the pollinators.
Collect the seeds a few weeks later and store for next season.

Sylvie { farmer ⋆ florist } on Instagram: "It’s officially time to start thinking about saving seeds! The best outcome for saving seed is to let the flower heads dry on the plant. We noticed last season that many of ours would rot from the heavy dew that begins in August and of course the fall rain. For those reasons, we collect our flower heads once they’ve aged and have seeds formed before they’re fully dry. We’ve had great success doing it this way! HOW TO: ✿ Look for flowers that appear to be ‘aged’. Typically these will have darker lower petals if they’re doubles or darker in colour than a ripe flower if they’re singles. ✿ Gently pull back the bottom row of petals to look for viable seed. You can also pluck a petal with seed attached to double check. Melinda Edwards on Instagram: "If you love zinnias but maybe not all the bright colors that come in a mix…looking at you yellow zinnias! Do this instead…buy individual seed packets in colors you do love and even different types. For instance, the zinnia colors and varieties shown here in my garden are: 🌸Benary Giant White, Wine, and Salmon 🌸Oklahoma White, Ivory and Salmon 🌸Queen Lime Red I just opened the packets, dumped them in a tray, mixed them all together and direct sowed them in the ground after our last frost date. The result was absolutely beautiful and I only have the colors in my zinnia patch that I love! No more random yellows and no more planting in color blocks😉! I will forever plant my zinnias this way in the future. Will you give it a try with your favorite colors? I am a zinnia hobbyist, and enjoy breeding my zinnias. If you have some zinnias, it is relatively easy to hybridize them yourself. The pollen florets (fuzzy yellow starfish) have the pollen, and the stigmas (Y-shaped tendrils) receive the pollen. (Click on these pictures to see larger versions of th...
