Microsoft Is Rewriting the Rules for Its Partner Ecosystem Over the last several weeks, I’ve been writing about how the Microsoft partner is evolving. The labels are blurring. Vertical expertise is becoming more important. Organizational knowledge is becoming an asset. AI is amplifying consultants. Projects are becoming the beginning of longer-term relationships. And partners are moving from selling technology to delivering outcomes. The interesting part? In 2027-28, Microsoft appears to be moving in the same direction. Microsoft’s new Frontier Accelerate framework is built around helping customers move through AI transformation, from planning and envisioning through deployment, adoption, optimization, and ongoing value realization. They’re introducing an Agentic Partner Capability Score, giving partners a way to demonstrate their ability to build and deliver agents. That’s significant. The ecosystem is moving from: “What products can you sell?” toward: “What capabilities can you demonstrate?” Microsoft’s specialization and skilling strategy, with AI capabilities embedded into partner requirements and recognition. Even the economics are changing. The new CSP Growth Margin model, launching 10/1/26 introduces a distinction between ongoing subscription economics and qualifying growth motions. Rewarding partners for creating growth, not simply maintaining the installed base. And then there’s something I find particularly interesting: COCP: Change of Channel Partner Customers can now initiate a Change of Channel Partner themselves through admin center and Azure portals. That’s a subtle but important shift. Customers have more control over who they want as their partner. The Microsoft partner of the future can’t rely solely on: * A licensing relationship * Technical certs * Implementation capability * A book of recurring revenue * Being the incumbent The partner has to continuously earn its place. That’s good news. Because it raises the value of the partner that knows the customer’s industry. The partner that can identify new opportunities. help customers adopt AI. continuously improve business processes. capture organizational knowledge and turn it into repeatable expertise. can prove outcomes. From my vantage point across the Sherweb ecosystem, this is one of the most exciting changes happening in the channel. The question we’re asking increasingly isn’t: “How do we sell more Microsoft?” It’s: “How do we help our partners become more valuable to their customers?” The move is clear. And it looks a lot like the future I’ve been describing throughout this series. Less transaction. More transformation. Less product. More outcome. Less “partner of record.” More “partner of choice.” The technology is changing. The economics are changing. The incentives are changing.
