This graphic illustrates the apex of Confederate military holdings in what is now West Virginia as of February, 1863. Official Confederate influence in the Mountain State was fleeting and short-lived as the secessionist flag had been removed from all county courthouses by the time WV became a state on June 20th of that same year.
