While I would have liked to claim this motif as an original idea, my illustration is actually based on a motif that is centuries old. It's called 'The Three Hares' and its origin has been traced back to the 6th Century AD (or CE - Common Era) in China. It seems that many other religions and cultures around the world have also used this rather mesmerizing optical illusion. The Three Hares is not found in the medieval bestiary but much like The Pelican in her Piety it is a common motif in medieval church carvings. Its meaning is something of a mystery and depictions of it in medieval art have been found as far west as Devon, England and as far East Dunhuang, China. Here we have an interesting association with the motif of the 2 fools who say "we are three" -- making the viewer by his/her puzzled inquiry the 3rd!
