About us

U&I is a non-profit organization working to bridge India's education gap through it's core programs: U&I Teach and U&I Empower. Since 2011, U&I Teach has provided after-school academic support to over 19,700 children from underserved communities across India. The program focuses on improving foundational literacy, numeracy, academic performance, and life skills through structured curriculum delivery and consistent mentorship by trained volunteers. Launched in 2020, U&I Empower engages the corporate employees in initiatives related to education, environmental sustainability, and awareness building. To date, over 200,000 corporate employees have participated in these programs, contributing volunteer hours and creating a measurable impact across sectors. • Sustainability meets creativity when teams come together to create something with purpose. CGI volunteers across Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune have turned their time and creativity into practical learning resources for students through volunteering activities with U&I. From DIY notebooks and bookmarks to seed pens that carry the promise of something growing long after the ink runs out, volunteers came together - folding, assembling, personalising and putting care into every resource they created. 405 volunteers creating 958 resources, each one made to be used, not simply admired! But the numbers only tell part of the story. What stands out is the thought behind every resource: the time spent getting a fold right, adding a personal touch to a notebook, or creating something that a child can carry into their classroom. These activities show what employee volunteering can look like when creativity, sustainability and purpose come together. A big thank you to our CGI volunteers for showing up, creating together and putting care into every resource they made. #WeAreCGI #CGIForGood Want to bring an experience like this to your team? • "We'd love to volunteer, we're just not sure where to start." We hear this from teams who genuinely want to do something but can't see a first step that doesn't involve a long approval chain. We hear it just as often from individuals - people with a free Saturday and no idea who to call. Story Lab is the first step. One day, one location, one activity you can learn in five minutes. Volunteers build storybooks by hand and write an original story inside, and those books go to students across our learning centers. No prior experience needed. No long-term commitment attached. If it leads somewhere, good. If it stays a good day, that's also fine. What if your corporate volunteers didn't just visit a community once a year? What if they became part of the program your CSR is already funding? Here's what that looks like in practice. You're funding a reforestation project. Ten thousand trees. What if your employees planted two thousand of them? Not as a team-building day. As contributors to an actual ecological outcome. You're funding an education program in government schools. What if your volunteers came every Saturday and tutored within that program? Not as visitors. As part of the teaching architecture. You're cleaning up fifty waste sites across a city. What if your college partners took ownership of ten? Not for a photograph. For a year. This isn't hypothetical. This is what we've been doing at U&I Trust for fifteen years with over 100,000+ volunteers across forty cities. And the data says something the CSR world hasn't fully absorbed yet. Volunteering is the only workplace intervention, out of ninety that were measured, to show a positive impact on both wellbeing and belonging. The only one. Not team lunches. Not offsites. Not wellness apps. Volunteering. Employees who volunteer through work are 52% less likely to leave. They're 5x more engaged than employees at companies without programs. 92% say it improved their skills. But here's the problem. Corporate volunteer hours are up 175% since 2019. More people are volunteering than ever. And the average hours per volunteer have dropped from 16.4 to 12.7 per year. More breadth. Less depth. More events. Fewer relationships. The answer isn't more volunteering days. The answer is embedding your volunteers into programs where they actually contribute. It takes a village to raise a child. What if your company was part of that village? Not for a day. For a year. If you'd like to understand how to integrate your volunteers meaningfully into your CSR program, DM me. • CSR used to be a line in the annual report. For three UK construction firms, it's now a job, a budget, and a factor in who wins the bid. A study of three large UK project-based construction organisations traced that shift - from client, legal, and competitive pressure, into a formal strategy with named owners like "Head of Sustainability," built into projects, and measured with KPIs and reports. One detail stood out: clients now ask about sustainability before deciding who gets the work. Worth noting: this is evidence from three large UK firms, based on senior-manager interviews - it doesn't prove CSR drives profit, and smaller firms may look very different. Where does your organisation sit - still an activity, or already part of the strategy? Full research paper linked in the comments. • Somewhere in September, a child will trace the letters on a wheel your team built and sound out their first 3-letter word. That's what International Literacy Day looks like in practice, volunteers sitting down and making something a young learner can hold and use. Teachers' Day works the same way. Behind every classroom is an educator stretched thin, and a well-built Learning Guide can lighten that load for months after. Then there's the International Day of Sign Languages. Learning a handful of signs through guided training isn't about ticking a box, it's about closing the distance between two people who'd otherwise struggle to talk to each other. These aren't one-off gestures. They're small, deliberate acts of showing up for people who notice the difference. If your team is ready to be part of that, September has room for you. • You build the book. You fill it with a story. A child reads it. That's Story Lab, and it's the first edition of our Volunteering Open House, a series that opens up U&I's work to anyone who wants to see it up close. Bring your team, or just bring yourself. Volunteers hand-assemble notebooks from loose note pages, then write an original inspirational story inside. The finished books go to students across our learning centres. No prior experience needed. Just a few hours and the willingness to show up. Teachers' Day, 5th September. Because every story is a teacher. • Got an old laptop, tablet, or phone you don’t use anymore? It could help a child learn. Somewhere in your home, there might be a device you no longer use. For a child, it could be the device that helps them learn, explore, and dream a little bigger. Your old laptop, tablet, or phone can open up access to learning for children across India. Through U&I, donated devices reach children in Srinagar, Mumbai, and 38 other cities, helping make digital learning more accessible to those who need it most. So before that unused device gathers another layer of dust, give it a second life. Give it a purpose. Give a child the chance to learn. Donate your unused device today. • What happens when you give children the space to turn their curiosity into ideas? For Avanthika, it meant watching students go from being shy about unfamiliar concepts to confidently exploring them, asking questions, and even thinking like young entrepreneurs. Inspired by ideas like Shark Tank, our students were allowed to come up with a product, develop their ideas, and bring them to life through a real, hands-on experience. What started as a classroom activity became a space for curiosity, creativity, problem-solving, and confidence to take centre stage. Because education isn’t just about knowing the answers, it’s about giving children the confidence to ask better questions, explore possibilities, and believe that their ideas are worth building. Thousands of children deserve more opportunities like this. If you want to help create these experiences and invest in the kind of learning that stays with a child long after the classroom ends.
