Common Nutrient Deficiencies For Celiac Disease
Eating gluten-free can be a life-altering experience for individuals with celiac disease. Damage to the small intestine can reduce the absorption of certain vitamins and minerals. Eating certain gluten-free foods can help restore nutrients!
6 Ways To Support Someone Living Gluten-Free
When Shelly’s youngest son, Christopher, was diagnosed with celiac disease at age 13, she and her husband made the immediate decision to make the entire household gluten-free. Sound familiar? You may know someone with celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivities (NCGS) who is living gluten-free. You want to be supportive, but you’re not sure how. We spoke with two moms who shared their journeys supporting and encouraging their children who are gluten-free. Read more via the link!
Wheat Straw
As a rule of thumb, anything that goes into the mouth should be evaluated for gluten content. Many brands of straws made from wheat straw are gluten-free because straw is the stalk left over after the gluten-containing grain is harvested. Some straws sourced from wheat straw have tested at levels below the FDA’s 20 ppm cut-off. Even though the potential for cross-contact exists, it is unlikely, yet it makes sense to be cautious and ask questions!
Food Freedom
There will come a time where you begin to feel liberated and find food freedom again! It's a process that often comes in waves; it isn't a linear process and it looks different for everyone. 🍎 Find gluten-free foods you truly enjoy & eat them often! 🙏 Honor your cravings (within reason of course). ☯️ Eat a balanced diet. 🙌 Honor your body & relationship to food by remembering your purpose for becoming gluten-free. 👩‍🍳Engage in safe social gatherings.
What Is Disordered Eating?
The term disordered eating refers to a range of irregular eating behaviors that can be physically and emotionally disruptive. Disordered eating may include behaviors like those seen in some eating disorders, but they are less extensive and less severe. Even though they are less severe, in some cases disordered eating could lead to an eating disorder. Malt vs. Maltodextrin or Maltose
The word “malt” in both of these ingredients can cause confusion since malt usually comes from barley, and barley is not gluten-free. 🤔🔍 However, both maltose and maltodextrin are gluten-free 👌 Maltose is a type of sugar and is inherently gluten-free. Maltodextrin is a thickener, flavor enhancer, or filler that can be derived from a variety of starches including corn, potato, rice, or wheat. Even when derived from wheat, maltodextrin is so highly processed that it is gluten-free. 🙌
Macro Vs. Micro Nutrients
🤸‍♀️A balanced diet of macro and micro nutrients will look different for everyone. 👩‍⚕️ If you have celiac disease or otherwise have intestinal damage you may not be absorbing nutrients as well as you could be. 💊 Certain types of medications and medical conditions can interfere with nutrient absorption. 🥘 While you can supplement some micro-nutrients, It's not as easy to achieve for all macro's.
Psychological Impacts of Cooking
We love to see folks continuing to take the time to be creative—whether tackling a homemade gluten-free lasagna recipe or that flourless chocolate torte—savor the moments and enjoy the process. ☮️ Cooking and baking can bring pleasure while you’re doing it and even more after you’ve finished and are ready to eat! 🧑‍🍳
FALCPA
While rye and barley are not part of FALCPA* like wheat is, they're usually listed as such so they're easy to identify. Malt, malt extract, malt vinegar, and brewers yeast, however, as derivatives of rye and barley can be a little more tricky to spot. All derivatives of wheat will be clearly indicated in accordance with FDA regulations. *Food Allergy Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004
