Nicolaus Copernicus – Creator of the heliocentric model of Universe

Nicolaus Copernicus, Polish astronomer who proposed that the Sun is the center of the solar system and that the planets circle the Sun. Copernicus also noted that Earth turns once daily on its own axis and that very slow long-term changes in the direction of this axis account for the precession of the equinoxes.

The neo-classical statue of Mikołaj Kopernik with a compass and armillary sphere was sculpted by Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) and unveiled outside the headquarters of the Polish Academy of Sciences (then the Society of Friends of Science) in 1830. Today, Nicolaus Copernicus is hailed by many historians as the originator of heliocentrism, one of the first steps towards modern cosmology and away from the Aristotelian cosmology which had previously dominated Western thought.
