I finally found Monarch caterpillars on the milkweed yesterday - but just 4. Today I can only find 2. It's been a pitiful season for Monarchs down here. I only saw one female come through a couple of weeks ago and may not see any more. This guy is almost fully grown. He'll turn to chrysalis right here in my yard and a Monarch will emerge by October - and will fly to Mexico to spend the winter. He is the 4th generation that will live 9 months to return to the States in the Spring. My 15…

Measuring worms are the larva of any of a large group of moths in the order Lepidoptera. Because the larva lacks the middle pair of legs, it moves in a characteristic “inching,” or “looping,” gait by extending the front part of the body and bringing the rear up to meet it. The larvae resemble twigs or leaf stems, feed on foliage, and often seriously damage or destroy trees and crops. best viewed LARGE: www.flickr.com/photos/rundstedt/4900848250/sizes/l/

It was her final act. Taken for dead, she had been pinned to a Styrofoam board. Her wings were locked in place with more pins and wax paper. It seemed pointless, but she did it anyway. Andrew my friend showed me his recent trophy. A beautiful Polyphemus, silk moth. As he recounted how he obtained this prize, I noticed a cluster of eggs at the tip of the moth's abdomen. I had tried several times to rear butterflies and moths, but each time had failed. Two weeks later, seven teen caterpillars…

Today, I'm going to dive into this paper, including giving a summary, describe some of the main findings, and most importantly, show you some of the…
