Whitney received a patent for his cotton gin in 1794. One cotton gin increased production of clean cotton, free of seeds, to 60 pounds a day from only a few pounds. While it was true that the cotton gin reduced the labor of removing seeds, it did not reduce the need for enslaved labor to grow and pick the cotton. In fact, the opposite occurred.
