These 20 x 20 x 20 mm aluminium blocks are prototypes for the next generation of 3D-printed lattice structures some of which are already used in the automotive and aerospace industries. Made using a process called 'selective laser melting' these structures are strong and stiff but light. That's good for a lot of things: fuel efficiency for example increases when vehicle parts are lighter. It's the hollow patterns that make them so effective.
