Poetry Cafe. Our Honors English class had a poetry cafe styled after the 1950s. We read poetry and presented works of art to express how we interpreted the poems. Everyone dressed as if they were beatniks. The class was decorated with low lighting, small tables and chairs, candles, and a small stage. It was a great experience.
One of my absolute favorite days from this school year was our Poetry Cafe. We completed a poetry unit in March this year. Yes, I know it's a month early, but it is what worked out best for our schedule! We spent the first week studying poetry and learning literary elements. My students were introduced to a lot of new vocabulary including: rhythmic pattern, rhyme, personification, alliteration, imagery, and many more poetic words. We spent each day during reading studying a certain element…

I absolutely love teaching poetry! That explains why I teach it ALL year! Each month I focus on TWO types of poetry and then during POETRY MONTH, we review all of our work, create poetry portfolios for a review, and have a POETRY SLAM! Read on for details! 1. BULLETIN BOARD At the beginning of the year, make a bulletin board to display posters of the different types of poetry. Leave a space below each one to place a student example. Review it with your class and tell them by the end of the…

Poetry Cafe - SGCA Learning Celebration!
Every year I introduce my class to poetry and every year they love it! They also love to write it. It gives them a fresh, new reason to write! I start out by immersing them in poetry. The one that always ends up being their favorite is All the Small Poems and Forteen More by Valerie Worth. This book teaches them that they can look at anything, even the most simple thing like grass, the sky, a rock, or a pencil, and see it so clearly if they look at it with "poet's eyes." They realized that…
Host a poetry cafe this winter! For me, January through March seems to be the hardest part of the school year to get through. The students are either restless (or just plain tired), the weather is always cruddy (I live in the Midwest), and there's really no holiday breaks to look forward to. (Not that I don't love my job, but you know what I mean...) To break up the monotonous routine and get students excited for literature, my colleagues and I have put on "poetry cafes." The students all…
