With the right additional hardware, the RTL-SDR software defined radio can be used as a super cheap radio telescope for radio astronomy experiments such as Hydrogen line detection, meteor scatter and Pulsar observing. Hydrogen Line Marcus Leech of Science Radio Laboratories, Inc has released a tutorial document titled 'A Budget-Conscious Radio Telescope for 21cm', (doc version) (pdf here) where he shows: Two slightly-different designs for a simple, small, effective, radio telescope capable…

Astronomers have located the origin of mysterious radio waves that have baffled them for a decade. The fast radio burst, or FRB 121102, has been traced to a faint, dwarf galaxy three billion light-…

The Kalyazin RT-64 radio telescope may look abandoned, but it's an active Russian observatory. Built in 1974 and operational since 1992, it joined an astrobiology program with ESA, Roscosmos, and ExoMars in 2016. A team of 17 scientists use it to study pulsars, white dwarfs, and distant galaxies. This powerful telescope helps unravel cosmic mysteries, from fading stars to deep-space objects.

Marcus Leech from ccera.ca is a pioneer in using low cost software defined radios for observing the sky with amateur radio telescopes. In the past he's shown us how to receive things like the hydrogen line, detect meteors and observe solar transits using an RTL-SDR. He's also given a good overview and introduction to amateur radio astronomy in this slide show. His recent project has managed to create a full Hydrogen sky map of the northern Canadian sky. In his project memo PDF…
