Last week’s Rate the Dress was a risky pick: a dress devoid of any trim, and shown without any styling or accessories. Did it work? This week’s Rate the Dress is equally risky, but in the opposite way. It has all the styling and accessories. Will the look be a little too much, or just right? I continue my series of antique French Fashion plates from the time of Maire Antoinette with a few examples of some of the more extreme fashions of the day. Most of us modern ladies think of historical clothing prior to the 1920's as being very conservative and buttoned up; however this is not always the case. Fashion Plate, circa 1787--Looks like a redrawing! Wealthy women of the 1780s were said to indulge in wearing two watches at once, a trend borrowed from (and subsequently abandoned by) gentlemen’s fashion. Many fashion plates of this trend show two chains of the same length, but with different configurations. Others, like this one, are perfectly matched and are only loosely “fob-like.” 1770s Fashion, 1780s Fashion, 1790s Fashion, 18th Century Hats, 18th Century Gown, 1700 Fashion, Rococo Era, Historical Gowns, Riding Habit

Just in time for that rosiest and most romantic of holidays, the theme of the Historical Sew Fortnightly Challenge #3, due Sat 15 Feb, is Pink. Pink is an interesting choice for a historical based colour challenge, because pink is, in itself, a fairly modern concept as a colour in the West. More than a few hundred years ago, the shades that we might term pink were considered variants of red or brown. To make pink even trickier, when you look at older garments and older illustrations of…

I have a lovely assortment of French fashion plates from the years 1780-1782 for today's post and a new digital scene depicting one of those beauties. I've stated before that I'm drawn to fashion plates that show the back of a garment. I especially liked this 1780 dress in the "Robe à l'Anglaise" style, so today's digital scene was created using that lovely fashion plate but in a new teal color I created. On a previous post, I created a digital scene using another fashion plate showing the…
