Our onions, leeks and shallots were planted today, May 2. The onions and leeks are started from seed on March 1. The shallots are from sets saved from last summers harvest.   The tool in front of my hand is called a Dibble (What a great word). You push it into the soil to make a hole for planting small seedlings or bulbs. 2-3 inches (5-8 cm) deep for onion plants, but 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) deep for leeks.
