Rebecca Beyer, a North Carolina forager, earthcrafter, tattoo artist, and author, among other pursuits, wants to remind us that we’ve never been gone from nature.

To some, the author of the “White Trash Cookbook” was a curiosity. Others called him a brilliant folklorist. But his greatest achievement was the model he left for how any Southerner can claim their roots.

Some of the best hunters in the South don’t need guns. Today, we visit with some of our region’s most sharp-eyed foragers in Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia — folks hunting down wild-grown foods of all kinds.
