Lava tubes

I posted this shot simply because I'm in awe of my new camera's low light capability. There was NO light inside this lava tube besides the dim incandescents you see. This was shot handheld at ISO 3200. It's noisy, but still gave me a useable image.

For much of 1970 and into 1971, lava flowed through a tube from Mauna Ulu into a complex lava lake in 'Alae Crater. The lake built natural levees, which allowed lake level to rise much higher than the old crater rim. Lava tubes developed in the levees as exits for lava entering the lake. This photo shows one such exit tube.

Nāhuku, or Thurston Lava Tube, in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park has reopened for the second time in two years after shutdowns due to natural disasters.

The Kamchatka Peninsula is a 1,250-kilometre-long (780 mi) peninsula in the Russian Far East, with an area of about 270,000 km2 (100,000 sq mi). It lies between the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Sea of Okhotsk to the west.

The tube was formed by a river of lava more than 1000ºC / 2000ºF. The tube was formed when the lava supply ended or was diverted elsewhere. What’s left behind is an empty tubular cave. There is a boardwalk and the tube is lit but pack a headlamp or a flashlight if you go.
