Quite simple and fun to play. The visuals are very charming as well. Nice work!

Developer

Thanks for playing! I am no artist but I am pleased with how the visuals/tones came out.

Nice runner, checks every box for this jam perfectly!

Developer

Thanks! I initially wanted to spend some time on a build-up/narration but ultimately chose to focus all my effort on gameplay & the arcade-feel.

Nice mechanic and a good interpretation of the idea! I really liked it. It feels like an old Atari game.

Developer

Thank you for the kind words - glad the retro aspect shone through.

I love this monster design and this was actually fun to play

Developer

Thanks, my initial design was more of a slime mold / infection type of monster with dendrils/tendrils (you can actually see this in one of the gifs I shared over Discord in the progress section), but this first attempt just ended up not being fun so I scrapped it. I am glad I did because this second draft ended up being much more dynamic & conducive to forcing the player down in an organic way.

Got to love a pico-8 submission! Very simple, but good game play, and a great use of the theme!

Developer

Glad you liked it ; I've tinkered with the PICO-8 before following tutorials and such but this is my first 'actual' game with it. I'll definitely be using it some more in the future.

Submitted

You should! Never gotten around to the engine myself, but it's definitively on the to-do list

I played for 10 seconds and died 11 times.

Very cool, and love the art.

"I played for 10 seconds and died 11 times." - Do I have my first speedrunner :) ?

Thanks for playing!

The visual style is really striking and i love the psudeo 3d monster!, idk why the gun matters but i had fun! the only real feedback i have is maybe make it so you can see further down but other than that this game is great fun!

Developer

Thanks! I've covered my intentions with the gun in previous comments in case you are curious. As for the camera seeing further down, that is good feedback ; just not sure how I would incorporate this yet : I wanted to keep a balance between risk taking to score faster / evade the Scyphon, and being overly cautious, resulting in the Scyphon catching up & flinging you about.

the art design for the monster is really cool! gameplay is simple, yet effective! my best score was 224! I understand your idea behind the gun, but it's probably just not necessary to have. good job!

I'd appreciate if you could play/rate my game as well! :)

Developer

224? Not too shabby! My best score so far is 552 ; I could have probably made the game a little bit easier on the platforms, but I wanted to keep the gameplay loop pretty short.

A very beautiful and interesting game, I really enjoyed it!

Developer

Thank you for the kind words and for playing!

Really fun, really solid!! Reading the other comments I LOVE your idea that the gun is useless. Def hard to show the player why their interactable element can't be used to interact but I think that's exactly in theme for the genre.

Monster design is my fav part for sure, those eye tentacles hehe

Developer

Thanks for playing! Glad you liked the monster design. I did have to can my first attempt entirely and start from scratch again but I am quite pleased with how it turned out in the end.

This game is a lot of fun! I really liked the jump, it felt really unique having a jump that also propels you. But I found the gun kind of pointless, the best strategy is to just keep going down as fast as you can and not bother shooting. Really cool game though, love the art, good job!

Developer

"I found the gun kind of pointless" - intentionally so :)... but perhaps poorly conveyed...

The art style and the 8-bit retro music was awesome. I liked having a gun skill, how do I aim up, though?

Reminded me of Spelunky, if you develop it further I'll play it again. Have a nice day.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the compliments on art & music. As for the gun, the fact you cannot aim 'up' (or whilst airborne) is intentional, I did not want to give the player too much incentive to linger & spend all their time trying to defeat the Scyphon, after all it cannot be killed ; In retrospect, I could have done a better job presenting this constraint to the player.

I had a lot of trouble shooting the monster at all. But I did play for a lot longer than I thought I would. Love the aesthetic. Love Pico games. Great job. love the submission.

Developer(+1)

Thanks, this is my first 'full' PICO-8 game, after tinkering with it a bit. I really only scratched the surface & I'll definitely be using it more in the future.

As for shooting the monster, I didn't quite manage to incorporate the gun as well as I was hoping ; the intention really was for it to buy you a bit of time/respite by disabling one or multiple tentacles temporarily (at the risk of you getting flung off in attempting to land a shot).

COOL!
