about

S.O.U.L. is the debut single from B.H.A.M. (Black History Arts Movement). Inspired by civil rights anthems by the likes of Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye or Arthera Franklin, SOUL reminds us of our need to stay guided by our soul and connected to each other. The release coincides with Black History Month in the UK in a celebration of Black history and music. Inspired by Robin D. G. Kelley’s ‘Freedom Dreams’, B.H.A.M. tells the stories of forgotten freedom struggles. In an honouring of the ancestors, each composition pays tribute to a group who, in the spirit of Sankofa, we could learn lessons from today. SOUL is in tribute to Soulbook, a quarterly journal that covered jazz, economics, poetry and anti-imperialism in the mid-1960s. Including contributions from Bobby Hamilton, a future founder of the Black Panther Party, and Baraka, a leader of the original Black Arts Movement, a standard issue could contain articles on the Jazz Avant Garde quoting Ornette Coleman and Archie Shepp, alongside an illustrated expose of the Puerto Rican Revolution.

lyrics

In the soul circle
We’re connected to the struggle
Our soul connects us to the whole
Just listen to your soul you’ll know

Sweet music fills our mind
Tells us truths we’re trynna find
And if that truth feels hard to swallow
Just listen to your soul, you’ll know

The soul circle
The soul circle
The soul circle
The soul circle

Cos everybody's got a soul
That's what connects us to the whole
Despite all the lies you have been told
Just listen to your soul, you'll know
