I took part in a Kufic calligraphy workshop with typographer John Kortbawi at
Notre Dame University, where I designed a Kufic arabesque of my first name.
Kufic calligraphy is one of the oldest Arabic scripts, and is characterised by geometrical lines and shapes. Kufic 'knots' are used to attach repeated words or letters together, especially through ascenders, thus forming the arabesque shapes.
