In 1519, the Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes arrived on the outskirts of Tenochtitlan, the capital of the mighty Aztec Empire. It has been said that to the Aztec emperor, Montezuma II, Cortes and his men were regarded not as mortals, but gods. Cortes himself was said to be the returning Aztec god, Quetzalcoatl. Ahuizotl was the eighth ruler of the Aztec empire from 1486 to 1592. He is known for reinvigorating the empire after the previous, less succesful rule of his brother Tizoc, doubling its size and gaining great renown as a great military commander and conqueror. He is depicted here as a "Tlacochcalcatl" or High General, rank he commanded before ascending to the throne.
