The Cotton Gin, by Eli Whitney in 1793 was a mechanical device that removes the seeds from cotton. It revolutionised the way cotton was harvested and modernised slavery. I chose him and his invention, because it was one of the key inventions of the industrial revolution and what shaped the U.S economy.
