Polyvagal theory explains that when we meet a challenge that overwhelms the ventral vagal system (executive functioning part of the brain), we move down the “ladder” into the mobilization of the sympathetic nervous system which allows for some form of fight or flight. If that the challenge cannot be resolved in the place of the sympathetic state, we then move to the most primitive of our survival responses, into immobilization and disconnection found in the dorsal vagal system (the reptilian brain).
