The above pattern is of Mamluk period and the below design was used during the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum at the Gok Madrasa and Mosque in Amasya, Turkey (1266-67), and at a much later date by Mamluk artists at the Sultan Qansuh al Ghuri Complex in Cairo (1503-05). The image is Plate 51 ("Wall Mosaics, 15th and 16th Centuries") from Arab Art by Prisse d'Avennes.

This is my first full attempt at constructing, tracing, tiling and painting an Islamic geometric pattern. This is the @samira.mian September patreon pattern - a Fourfold Jaali. I did a first construction with a 9.5cm radius, then another one with a 6.5cm radius and finally decided that was still too large so settled on a 5cm radius. 😅 Tiled it 2 by 3 on 9x12 inches watercolour paper. I’m still learning to use watercolours, trialing different paper brands and refining my overall techniq...
