Winter Palace, St. Petersbourg

The State Hermitage Museum is a museum of art and culture in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The second-largest art museum in the world, it was founded in 1764 when Empress Catherine the Great acquired an impressive collection of paintings from the Berlin merchant Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky. This is one of the first sights visitors have when they enter the Hermitage Museum. This staircase, which provided access to the state apartments, is absolutely magnificent. It is one of the few parts of the palace that retains its original 18th century style. It was badly damaged during a fire in 1837, but the original plans from architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli were used for the reconstruction.

The State Rooms of the Winter Palace are dazzling and form a logical part of any visit to the Hermitage Museum.
