Shackleton expedition

Photos of Sir Ernest Shackleton and his Antarctic expedition crew have emerged. They were taken at a New Zealand garden party days after returning to civilisation in 1917.

It's 100 years since the great Antarctic explorer set out on his last voyage to the White Continent.

It was later used on the front cover of Shackleton’s account of the expedition, South. Hurley described the scene in his autobiography: Never did the ship look quite so beautiful as when the bright moonlight etched her in inky silhouette, or transformed her into a vessel from fairy-land.

The ship Endurance sank in 1915 and is amazingly well preserved—its name is still visible on the stern.
