Hand embroidery tutorial: Raised satin stitch lettering
I love adding a little height to my satin stitch letters sometimes. To accomplish this, simple outline your letter with a back stitch or stem stitch and then do your satin stitch over that. The result is a delightfully puffy letter that has just the right amount of texture and interest. You can experiment with different numbers of strands. In this example I use 3 strands of DMC floss. Always completely separate your strands (and then put the number of strands you want back together) to get a uniform height/lay in your stitching.
