I did not know about Juneteenth until I was in my 40s. I recall how embarrassed and ashamed I felt, but it just wasn’t taught to me in school, and America doesn’t exactly go out of her way to teach privileged white kids like me about the horrors our ancestors inflicted on generations of human beings. Hopefully, that has changed.

remember when Wil Wheaton told Mikki Kendall aka @ karnythia aka the author of NYT bestseller “Hood Feminism” during Black Lives Matter about 10 years ago that she was (and implicity, other “angry Black women” were) alienating white support from the cause of not wanting to be killed in cold blood on livestream in 4K by cops and vigilante white supremacists, and said that she only had herself to blame for it, all because she wasn’t talking nice to him and centering his feelings

Oh I forgot about that, but honestly it was in the moment a bunch of noise from a lot of white celebs who are now pretending to be woke

Meme of Indiana Jones punching a Nazi atop a tank. Text reads, “I came here to study the humanities and punch Nazis, and they just cut funding for the humanities.”ALT

I know I’ve featured this scene on the Nazi Punch of the Day, but this version seemed particularly timely given the ongoing attacks on education.

an imperfect ally is better than a perfect bystander

the old boomer who “doesn’t get the gays” but still votes blue every election is still a better ally to you than every well-spoken, woke millennial who says all the right shit but didn’t vote because they “didn’t like either option”

the lady who voted for trump but has changed her mind since and is calling her senator every day is a better ally to you than anyone very politely apologizing for how awful things are and not doing anything to actually help

“If you’re waiting around for pure ideological alignment, you’re going to be waiting for a very long time. And in the meantime, you’ll get nothing done at all.”

This was intentionally manufactured by Facebook. Facebook implemented it’s “accountability culture” starting with its rule about only using your real name and photo on its service and encouraging you to disclose other information in your profile, and from there it just got normalized. It was entirely to gather data for advertising purposes, but now we associate that level of openness with “accountability”. Entire generations are now being raised with this as the norm. Privacy is no longer a priority, or even really seen as an option.

This is to your detriment. Your privacy protects you from predators of all kinds. You really should be guarding it carefully. Disclose what you feel is important on a case by case basis, but even your mental health status and beliefs are exploitable by big business and small-time bullies and abusers alike.

Even if you’re not overly fussed about what people know about you, just understand that not everyone has the luxury of feeling the same. Some people have stalkers and abusers they’re trying to evade, or don’t want to attract new abusers into their lives by being that vulnerable and open again. Some people have extreme social anxiety. Some people are protecting other people in their lives. Some people just don’t want their grandmothers to find their smutfics. Some people are Internet privacy advocates who keep their details private as a political statement and as a matter of principle.

You are not entitled to anyone’s information, and you do not owe anyone yours. You are allowed to just be an anonymous username until you feel safe to disclose more.

You are not entitled to anyone’s information, and you do not owe anyone yours.

This! Bring back handles! Let me decide when im ready to tell you my IRL name.

A female & male Gambel's quail and their 19 very small chicks are gathered to drink at a small pool of water. The male overlooks the scene while the female takes a sip on the left side of the pool.ALT

It looks like it's probably really lovely to be a quail family drinking cool water on a hot day~ALT

Periodically I think of the stories that disappear. Fanfiction, original, snippets even, things I have read and loved but something happened and they aren’t online anymore. And sometimes you can find the writers (mostly you can’t) and I think about luck and persistence and what it means to create and win or lose as life deals out a hand you can’t control exactly…but I wish I could.

Tom Cox @cox_tom Almost certainly the best thing I was ever told about owls was when I met an owl handler and he told me that the wild owls in the sanctuary where he worked worried about the tame show owls there and sometimes stopped by to leave them shrews and mice as presents.ALT

i used to work for a nature center and we would constantly have wild owls come and call out to the owls in their cages and try to 1.) get them to follow them or 2.) they were looking for a mate

in the spirit of this post: when you live in areas with wild horses, the number one culprit for horse theft is actually other horses, because the young stallions that get chased out of the herd wanna start their own, and oh, look, look at all those cute mares in just,,,,a fenced off grassy area,,,how easy would it be to lure them over the fence,,,like some four-legged yodeling pied piper,,,

i think about this a lot
