Have you ever tried growing ginger root?
We tried a small pot this year and on Saturday had “the big reveal” and, well… our roots are still less than impressive after 7 months! So they were divided and repotted and three KEGG members will trial overwintering them to see if decent-sized ginger roots will develop.
And I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how things develop.
🗣 THE KEGG GARLIC SALE IS BACK!!!
We planted extra garlic last fall to make sure we’d have enough for another public sale — and this year’s crop is ready to go!
Our KEGG-grown garlic is grown right here at our garden spot in Kimberley’s Townsite neighbourhood, year after year using bulbs saved from the previous harvest. Take some home for the kitchen, plant some in your own cold-climate garden this fall — or do a little of both!
Come say hello this Saturday, check out the garden, and grab some locally grown garlic while it lasts!

One of the many nice things about “gardening in community” as a collective garden group (ie. KEGG is made up of 35 households who garden & harvest together up in Townsite) is that whenever ‘work stuff’ or ‘health stuff’ or ‘change of plans stuff’ or just plain ‘busy life stuff’ comes up and someone can’t make it out to the KEGG garden for a stretch of time… enough other members do make it out each week and things keep getting done & the garden keeps on thriving (for whenever one does make it back) 🙌
For example… after returning from a handful of garden work bees away, I discovered that we now have a cute new door with a dandy deer handle on our little KEGG greenhouse (where lovely tomatoes were glowing both inside and outside) 🍅
And, as anyone at last Saturday’s work bee will tell you… this year’s garlic harvest is looking GOOD (again) 🧄
Which is good timing, because KEGG’s Big Garlic Sale is happening this Saturday, September 12th (something we discussed as a group over coffee and a homemade European treat that sounded something like “Flugen Flam” — but I could definitely be misremembering that pronunciation) ☕

And a friendly reminder for garden visitors: KEGG is a collective membership garden, so the food growing in our garden isn’t available for public harvesting. Harvesting decisions are made by the group — including what stays growing, what’s harvested for members, what’s saved for seed, & what we share with the broader community through our relationships with amazing organizations like Healthy Kimberley Food Recovery Depot and Kimberley Helping Hands Food Bank.
We love having people stop by, see what’s growing & get inspired (or come talk to us during one of our weekly work bees) — we just ask that you please leave the harvesting to KEGG members, as our garden space can only grow so much food each season & we need to keep track of where things go (and how things grow) 🙏

Shoutout to everyone who came out + brought some local-grown goodness to KEGG’s second annual Harvest Potluck (and extra shoutout to those who spearheaded making things happen & cheers to the weather for mostly co-operating) — it was a lovely evening up at McDougall where we:
✅ swapped savoury & sweet dishes (with KEGG-grown goodness often a starring ingredient) 👍
✅ tossed some bocce balls at the nearby lawn bowling courts (thank you Kimberley Lawn Bowling) 👍
✅ and everybody chitted and/or chatted like one does at a potluck & had a nice time (some leaving with freshly picked KEGG-grown goodness to take home for future tasty dishes) 👍
Of course, there’s still plenty of garden season left (harvesting, processing harvests, composting, garlic sale + garlic planting, weeding, etc)… so shoutout to EVERYONE taking part in any of the many parts that come with growing food locally this year & every other year (wherever your garden grows) 🍻🥂

One of the things about seed saving (especially when you garden with others), is you wanna make sure you communicate what not to harvest (which sometimes involves getting out the caution tape to make extra sure that nobody mistakenly picks the giant zucchini or bean or etc that is being saved for seed saving) 👍
Ok, now it’s your turn to share a seed saving tip (either as your own post or as a comment on this post or in random conversation with others) 🫘🌱
The hollyhock’s don’t quite pop as much against a smokey sky backdrop as they do against a blue sky backdrop, but they still look pretty nice this time of year (especially when one factors in that most of the current smoke is from prescribed burns and there is no longer an evacuation alert hanging over our garden’s group work bees… which makes it easier to focus on positive things like how the peas and Scarlett runners are climbing up our new archways just like we hoped they would) 🙌 🌸 🙏
☀️ When the hot sun is beating down, but there are tomato trellises still to be constructed and not enough hats to go around… that’s when it’s time to test out the ‘cabbage hat’ hack (all you need is one large cabbage leaf, some string, and the willingness to put a cabbage leaf on your head) 🥬👒
And, as you can see from the pics in this post, the cabbage hat worked great (ie. it provided enough shade to finish the tomato trellis work & looked fashionable in a garden setting) + it can also be confirmed that the hollyhocks have started popping 🌸 👍
It’s that time of the garden season when Monday mornings don’t just mean tending the garden… they also mean filling baskets with fresh produce to share with our neighbours through the Healthy Kimberley Food Recovery Depot 💚🥬
Every week throughout the harvest season, our volunteers do a special morning harvest of whatever is ready—turnips, onions, kale, lettuce, herbs, tomatoes, garlic scapes, Swiss chard, and whatever else the garden is generously producing that week (as things change throughout the growing season)!
It’s one of our favourite parts of the season: growing food together, enjoying plenty ourselves, and knowing that a healthy helping of our collective harvest is finding its way to tables throughout our community through great organizations like the Kimberley Food Recovery Depot and fellow Kimberley Cranbrook Food Network members like Kimberley Helping Hands Food Bank Society 🙌
Here’s to many more weekly harvests… and don’t forget that sharing locally grown food with our local food banks and food recovery depots (Kimberley or Cranbrook) is open for any local grower/sharer to participate in all year long (aka: #plantarowsharearow #kimcrangrowtogether) 🌱
It’s that time of the garden season when you turn up to help garden and you leave with some turnips for your efforts (and some kale and some garlic scapes and some lettuce and some swiss chard and some herbs and some coffee treats and some bok choy and some promises of even more to come next time as everything in the garden starts growing more & more with all this lovely extra sunshine) ☀️
If our garlic keeps growing at this rate we might have to take a page out of the corn’s playbook and build ourselves a garlic maze (those are some of our tallest gardeners pictured in the garlic patch after all 😉 🧄
