She lights two candles, passes her hands over the candles 3 times, then covers her eyes and recites this blessing. Growing up, we did not recite prayers by memory. I believed that prayers must always rise spontaneously, otherwise I risked becoming trite in my devotion to God. Jesus taught his disciples to pray, because reciting prayers was a part of their lives, including the ancient Shema. Does the Shema matter to Christians?
