On a retrouvé le fils de Daniel Johnston et de Robert Wyatt et il travaille dans un centre d'appels téléphoniques à San Antonio, Texas. Son nom est Richard Wilson Avena. Il approche doucement de la cinquantaine, il est boulimique de pop music des sixties, compose et joue depuis l'âge de 13 ans. Dépressif chronique, la musique et la famille sont "ceux qui l'ont tenu vivant toutes ces années". Il s'occupe quotidiennement de son père âgé, un ancien auteur et militant pour les droits civiques mexicain. Avec comme seules armes son 8 pistes et ses instruments : un synthé bourré de sons, deux guitares, une poêle à frire, un verre et une fourchette pour la section rythmique, Richard se plaît à pondre des démos par centaines, sans chercher à rendre ces pépites trop brillantes, il ne les retravaille pas, et de notre point de vue, elles en sont bien plus précieuses.

Il ne cherche pas non plus à les faire sortir de sa chambre, excepté sur des centaines de vidéos Youtube balancées dans le vent et accompagnées d'images fixes dans le genre fond d'écran. C'est complètement par hasard que La Belle Brute est tombé, au détour d'un sombre virage digital, sur "La Chanson de Crapaud", ôde étrange et lancinante trainant une voix à la Wyatt doublée de bruits de bouches sortis tout droit d'un Morricone. Alors ce fût une porte ouverte sur des dizaines et des dizaines de compositions aux squelettes incandescents et aux cheveux dans le vent. Un drôle de monde où les Beach Boys prendraient Nick Drake en stop pour l'emmener chez Taco Bell.

Quelques échanges de mails plus tard, avec en pièces jointes des dizaines de morceaux, des photos d'enfance, des sapins de Noël et des remerciements à ses parents, son premier disque est prêt. Et il s'appelle sobrement : Richard Wilson Avena.

We’ve found the son of Daniel Johnston and Robert Wyatt, and he works at a call center in San Antonio, Texas. His name is Richard Wilson Avena. Slowly approaching his fifties, he is a voracious fan of sixties pop music, composing and playing since the age of 13. A chronic depressive, music and family are 'what have kept him alive all these years.' He takes care of his elderly father daily, a former writer and activist for Mexican civil rights. Armed with only his 8-track recorder and his instruments—a synth full of sounds, two guitars, a frying pan, a glass, and a fork for the rhythm section—Richard enjoys churning out demos by the hundreds. He doesn’t aim to polish these gems, leaving them untouched, and in our view, this makes them even more precious.

He doesn’t try to release his music beyond his room either, except for hundreds of YouTube videos cast into the digital void, accompanied by static images like screensavers. It was entirely by chance that La Belle Brute stumbled upon La Chanson de Crapaud, a strange and haunting ode with a Wyatt-like voice layered over mouth sounds straight out of a Morricone soundtrack. This discovery opened the door to dozens upon dozens of incandescent skeleton compositions with windblown hair. A curious world where the Beach Boys might pick up Nick Drake hitchhiking to Taco Bell.

A few email exchanges later, with attachments full of tracks, childhood photos, Christmas trees, and thank-yous to his parents, his first album is ready. It is simply titled Richard Wilson Avena.
