A few years ago, or maybe a year ago, I did a roundup of mom coats. This isn’t a thing like when Dove started marketing to men, and you put the soap in a black bottle and make it smell like pine sap and suddenly it’s soap for men. Moms of young children have specific needs when it comes to outerwear. We need pockets, for example. We might need to be able to zip a baby in a carrier inside a coat. We need a material that is wipeable, or if not wipeable, then not white. You might like a hood or something water resistant, because if it’s raining, well…you’re carrying an umbrella over your kids. Not yourself. And so here we are, with a little roundup of mom-friendly outerwear because it’s starting to get cold out there!
GOOD FOR WEARING WITH A BABY
When I was pregnant, both times, I lived in New York and I was pregnant in the winter. After the babies were born, it was still freezing—I wore this Aritzia Super Puff coat in one size bigger than I usually wear, through both pregnancies, and then I’d wear my kids in their little baby carrier under the coat with the coat zipped up over the baby. It is a great coat, and now they make it in a water-resistant finish. Aritzia coat, $325
A GREAT MIDWEIGHT CASUAL JACKET
I love this one, it’s very casual, has a ton of pockets, and is super durable. Doen, $458
SOMETHING NICE TO WEAR WHEN YOU’RE PREGNANT
When I was pregnant, it was winter—like I said—and I was both cold and hot at the same time. I couldn’t figure out a coat. If it was really cold, nothing with buttons would button. And then sometimes if I wore my Super Puff, I’d get so so so hot. I found a robe coat, and it was perfect. I could easily open it up to get some cool air in, or, I could tie it around, and my belly would still be comfortable. A robe coat is the way to go. I like this one because it’s lightly puffy, very soft, and a real treat when you’re knocked up. Joseph coat, $1,385
A CUTE TRENCH WITH POCKETS THAT WON’T GET TANGLED UP AROUND YOUR LEGS
When I’m with my kids, it can be annoying to wear a long coat or jacket because they get all tangled up around me, and I need to be very mobile and able to run around. I like this one because it’s a trench, but is cropped! And has a ton of pockets. A must The Frankie Shop, $495
A BEAUTIFUL, WATER-RESISTANT OPTION
OOOOOOH fancy! Great for rain, or if your kids wipe something on you, you can just wipe it off the coat with a wet cloth! Easy. J.Crew, $160
ONE MORE SHINY WATERPROOF COAT
Very shiny! And with a hood, so if it does rain, you’re all set. B&SH, $495
A BOMBER
This one is made with Italian water-resistant nylon. It has one exterior pocket, two side pockets, and I don’t actually know if there are any interior, but it will definitely do the trick, and looks very cool. Tibi, $945
A FIELD JACKET
Talk about pockets! Talk about practical! This one is an all-around winner. It looks great, and is a perfect playground jacket. Easy to layer under, and tons of room for snacks, tissues, and the odd plastic dinosaur toy. Cos, $349
ONE MORE GREAT ONE
This is oil cloth with really soft leather at the collar and the cuffs. I love the green color, love the shape, and again, pockets—lots of pockets. The oil cloth means it has a little water resistance, but this is a great one to wear over a lot of other layers. A.L.C., $895
That’s it! Mom coats!
Your friend,
Laurel
This post hit the sweet spot between practical and chic—the holy grail of mom fashion. I love that every pick acknowledges how real life actually works (snacks, spills, sprints). The way you write about motherhood and clothes always makes it feel like we can still care about what we wear without pretending life is tidy. Also, now I’m convinced I need something with oil cloth and too many pockets.
The dinosaur in pocket is a vastly underrated secret accessory 😂
