dhorkto News•Nonprofit libraries ordered by State Department to stop processing passport applicationsEnglish6·1 day agoYour very first passport is subject to additional scrutiny. You generally have to go to a local facility that accepts applications, present your original documents, and attest that they are genuine. Then, all the documentation is sent to the State Department where they validate it all. When the passport is issued, your supporting documents are returned to you by mail. (I hope you didn’t have to move in between!)

https://talkingbiznews.com/media-moves/97253/
The actual interview is stuck behind a paywall, but EJE is quoted as saying
“I don’t understand Jeffrey,” Jay Epstein continued. “I can’t conceive of why he would go out with an underage woman, unless your theory’s right that he’s a pedophile…”
Which isn’t the best take right now.
Furthermore, EJE was a journalist with a penchant for looking into conspiracy theories. It is very likely EJE’s “shadow commission” was just a nickname for some of his friends getting together to talk shit about the government.
It’s quite simple. If the US had evidence that aliens existed, do you think Donald Trump would gave kept it a secret? He would make a big show of insisting to be the guy who they talk to when they say “Take me to your leader”, and he wouldn’t be able to resist telling us all about it.
dhorkto News•Trump threatens to bypass Congress and order new voting laws ahead of midtermsEnglish12·2 days agoActually, you technically don’t. The only citizenship requirement that the Federal Government puts on voting is that you affirm, under penalty of perjury, that you are a citizen, which moves the burden of proof. If a government official thinks someone registered themselves illegally, it’s up to the government to prove it.
Some states will impose their own documentation requirements, with varying levels of force. Some states have their own forms that require proof, but still accept the Federal form which only asks for the affirmation. Others will accept the Federal form, but will only register those people for Federal elections. (A small handful of states do not take the Federal form at all, and I am not yet sure why.)
All states will require some proof of address (like a drivers license), only because they will need to know which district to put you in. Yet there was a court case in the 80s that homeless people without a permanent address (and presumably without their documentation) were still entitled to be able to vote if they hold citizenship.
North Dakota has no statewide voter registration at all, but that turns out to be a bad thing too, because it required proving eligibility every time someone votes.

dhorkto RetroGaming•For the past 3 years Ben Ward has been remastering the financial game Wall Street Raider created by Michael Jenkins originally on DOS in 1986: This is the Story of Wall Street RaiderEnglish4·2 days agoIt’s a remarkable story. I wonder what it is that makes the game so hard to port to other systems. It’s probably not structured the way a program in a modern language would be. Is that why so many devs struggled with it?

That’s an awful lot of words, when you could have just said “No, I can’t tell you that.”
I’m less upset that all SSNs might end up compromised and more upset that no one is going to get punished for it. If a career Federal Employee did this, they would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
But since it was Elon’s friends who did it, everyone in power will just shrug and say “who knew this would be such a big deal”…
