"And they frown at the bad things"
MADELINE SAYS FUCK BLUE LIVES
oh to be a small french girl saying poo poo to tigers and frowning at cops
I love UPA's "messier" style of animation, especially in contrast to the neat and clean animation their contemporaries (and former employers) over at Disney used. This is one of the reasons I love One Hundred and One Dalmatians so much.
17/52 The Weekly Animation Challenge 2021: Studio Spotlight: UPA
A cute and faithful adaptation but the fact that Madeline doesn't have red hair here bothered the hell out of me. I guess that's my latent identity as a Madeline aficionado jumping out.
in an old house in paris covered with vines lived 12 little girls in 2 straight lines. in 2 straight lines they broke their bread, brushed their teeth and went to bed. they smiled at the good, and frowned at the bad. and sometimes they were very sad. every day at half past 9 they left the house in 2 straight lines. in rain or shine. the smallest one was madeline.
This was so cute all these girls are drawn so precious I wanna kiss each of them on the top of the head
Such a graceful short, delicate and lilting even when the image is bursting with clutter in the background paintings of an impressionistic tourist's vision of Paris. Gladys Holland's narration, contributes a lot to that, as does the constant fluidity of the animation, with environments dissolving into each other as the simple doodles representing the characters walk across them. It's clear how this evolves out of Bobe Cannon's previous films at UPA, but it still feels like a big pivot for him, moving away from jazzy minimalism into picture-book charm and exchanging crisp clean lines for big smudgy paintbrush strokes, in both the backgrounds and the lovely effects animation. Incredible soothing and sweet.
these orphan girls wearing primary color uniform and walking in 2 straight lines everyday i’m craving that type of routine and stability
