My first houseguest since Covid, we're both vaxxed, recognized this Feature Films for Families VHS on my shelf. We mixed some bourbon and ginger ales (Horses necks? Presbyterians?) and settled in for this VHS marvel, projected larger than life on my living room wall. Sort of a summer bible camp reunion MST3K. Evangelical conservative childhoods are pretty uniform, at least as far as cinema is concerned.
Highlights:
A fight with literal horseshit. RICH KIDS ARE JERKS.

i never understood all the moralizing about four kids just willing to do whatever it takes to stay together....oh no they steal and lie....oh no how evil!....
well at least things work out in the end. i hear there's a cut that is without the grandma that spends the movie scolding everything the kids do and i'd prefer that version honestly.

Another childhood movie. Quite cheesy, of course. Worthwhile for children, but not something I have any desire to watch as an adult. Unless I'm drunk.

A few minutes in, I thought it was terrible, and I looked over at him, and with glossy eyes he said, "Mom loved this one".

My wife legit thought that the theme song of this movie, which she weirdly watched many times as a child on a VHS tape, was Bon Jovi’s “Living on a Prayer”. And if you listen to that Osmond Boys track closely, it’s not that unfair to believe.
This is a nice throwback. Watched this back in 2013 and 2 or 3 more times till now. Wish the movie quality was better but its all good.

I watched the Feature Films for Families version so much as a kid, the VHS broke. This was my first watch on DVD - the Questar version, which contains more cursing and less old lady - and I think I like this one better. (My inner child was thrilled every time I heard a curse word. Take THAT, heavily sanitized childhood!) It's been probably 20 years since I've seen the version I grew up with, but a lot of it came back to me as I watched. Although I kinda want to track down the edited version on DVD now and do a full comparison. We shall see.
