“there’s no something without nothing”
the kind of tender ode to grief that only comes along once in a while and feels equal parts crushing and reassuring. would pair beautifully with world of tomorrow. i replayed the ending scene and credits 4 times and sobbed. the kogonada is loved party is being held at my apartment tonight, BYOB
devoting time to preserving someone’s memory — not the memory of them, but within them. loss, even when processed internally, can feel very selfish. our grief is limited to the memories we hold, or at least it seems that way. what kogonada achieved with after yang is so precious, because it reaches beyond our own limitations. i think loss feels so endless because it’s that separation of putting your own pieces together when what you really want is so much more. you grieve for your own loss, you grieve for the memories that were stopped mid sentence, you grieve for the people that you never met but lost something too, you grieve for everything that hadn’t happened yet. i think that’s why we can feel loss over someone we didn’t know. the knowing of everything that was left in them. and would it be intrusive to extract all that was left? maybe. and maybe it’s just the beginning.
Perhaps more speculative than “Columbus” yet no less poignant, Kogonada’s second feature “After Yang” is the kind of cozy sci-fi marvel that can only be made by someone with an incorruptible belief in the life of objects and the humanity of all things.
