There's a name I'd not thought of for awhile. Director Michael Caton-Jones made some high profile prestige movies back in the nineties. Looks like the Basic Instinct sequel that he directed ended a bit of a hot streak. That's one I might have to give another watch. Ron Perlman fans should be happy to see him as a gruff aging "hitman with a heart of gold" in Asher. Nothing too special here and I wouldn't want to oversell it, but as films continue to shrink in scope and production value, it's nice to be reminded of the simple pleasure that a good performance can provide.
Horrendously boring
Ron Perlman gets a chance to shine as an ageing assassin who falls for Famke Janssen in this slow-burning but very well-acted action drama (known as Hitman Redemption in the UK) that is compelling because of Perlman's brooding but sensitive turn. This is definitely more of a character piece than it is an action film, but that is precisely why it works, even if the screenplay by itself doesn't do much you haven't seen in many other films like this. In this movie we meet Asher played by Ron Pearlman, who is an ex- Mossad agent. Who is living a grim life in ever-changing Brooklyn, and is hired to kill the one man who could help him become the man he aspires to be.
In the opening scene it pretty much sets the tone of the movie. As he commits a job he us hired to do. Then we meet Sophie played by Famke Janssen and things begin to change along with a few good twists after another job goes sideways with a group of people.
The performances are good along with the directing. I do reccomend that you watch it!!

I read that this was a passion project for Ron Perlman and that he had been trying to get it made for 15 years. And I wonder how different this would have been if he had gotten to make it that long ago. I don't mean to downplay Perlman, but the action is pretty insignificant. Pretty much stand still, point, shoot, and go buy groceries. But what I did enjoy was his character and facing older age, and he has lost some pep in his step. Ultimately not that great (and likely inferior to plenty of recent films that I turned off after 10 minutes), but I got sucked in by Perlman's soulful stillness in the title role. He succeeds in partially redeeming the cliché of the world-weary hitman by wearing Asher's ennui lightly, treating contract killing as if it were any other vocational grind. Chemistry with Janssen is strong, too, building a relationship you want to root for. And while it'd been 16 years since my last Michael Caton-Jones experience, this film is the definition of confident, relaxed professionalism—a formal correlative to the recurring image of Asher carefully polishing his boots before setting out on a job. Teilweise wirklich sehr schön gefilmt und besonders die Montage am Anfang war sehr stark inszeniert.
Außerhalb davon gibts leider nicht viel positives zu berichten. Krampfhafte Dialoge, teilweise wirklich mittelmäßiges acting und inhaltlich leider auch total uninteressant.

The poster may be Ron Perlman in a suit with a gun but don't let that fool you, there is very little action here, this is a slow and character driven piece which gives Perlman a chance to shine in a lead role. Perlman playing an aging assassin trying to leave his life behind him because of love may not be original but damn Perlman is excellent here with Famke Janssen being equally brilliant as his love interest. Although the film does take it's time it's better for it with the only one bad note in the form of a terrible CGI explosion which should have been written around. Come for Perlman looking dashing in his black suit and drinking red wine rather than an action crime thriller and you won't be disappointed.
Director Michael Caton-Jones doesn't offer much of anything not seen before in other aging professional hitman films like it, but Asher gets through just fine with the help of a commanding as always central performance from Ron Perlman.
Sturdy, no frills programmer with Ron Perlman as an aging, melancholy Jewish hitman who just sort of wants someone to cook dinner for. Thankfully, he finds that in Famke Janssen's equally lonely dance instructor, who cares for a dementia-riddled mother who barely recognizes her daughter anymore. Plays out more like a middle-aged character drama/romance than a straight up action movie (in fact, the shoot 'em up beats are the least interesting part of the picture), with some half-assed attempts at subtext as Perlman's paid death dealer is "phased out" of his current position via a criminal "merger". Bonus points for Richard Dreyfuss showing up ostensibly to shoot two days as a walking stereotype named Avi, who doles out orders from the back of his tiny tailor shop in Brooklyn.
What a pleasant surprise to watch a film where there is nary a character under 50 in sight.
sooo bland but ron is so sexy the meet cute angle makes up for it
