Wow, Alain Delon really decided to produce a gay gangster movie with him and Jean-Paul Belmondo as the leading roles. That’s exactly how I win.
Ok but was it gay? Like a little maybe?
I know they're playing it for comic effect, but the fight between Belmondo and Delon near the start is truly awful. At one point in the middle of the fight Belmondo actually points into the distance and when Delon looks away he hits him with a sucker punch. And even watching a fuzzy old copy you can still see the punches go nowhere near making contact.
A pretty forgettable French gangster buddy movie that starts off in a very light-hearted manner then gets progressively more serious, but never very interesting. How could they make a film with Belmondo & Delon such a dull experience?
A vehicle for the two stars produced by Delon because he wanted to work with Belmondo, but they fell out over petty differences about billing and number of close-ups. The film really wasn't worth taking so seriously.

What a blast! Jean-Paul Belmondo and Alain Delon as two punks working their way up from petty hustlers to crime lords in ‘30s Marseille. Part crime story, part mismatched buddy comedy, you can feel the evolution from Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid. But looking forward this feels very heavily influential on De Palma’s Scarface, but more importantly on The Godfather (also released by Paramount just two years later) which adopted a similar sepia aesthetic in its period gangster tale.
RIP, Belmondo. Your films are still making me happy after all these years.
Borsalino Double Feature
Part1: Borsalino (1970)
Two years before the greatest (gangster) film of all time Belmondo and Delon built a fantastic duo in Borsalino.
The film itself has some great twists an amazing ending and simply a cool and enjoyable story. It only lacks sometimes in some scenes which are completely out of time like the beginning or the ending. Also the score irritates sometimes instead of giving a tensed flair for this it felt like a heist movie. I mean I love a jazzy score but this was sometimes not really suited. Even when it was suited for the feel good scenes and the complete setting.
alain delon and jean-paul belmondo in suits, throwing (gay) glances and subtle smiles at each other for two entire hours, what more could i possibly want?
i love this movie because it’s such an easy and enjoyable watch — it’s got a great score and a duo of french actors which is hard to compete with ; delon and belmondo aren’t even really acting, they’re just playing with their usual personas but their presence and charisma on screen are just perfect for this movie. other than that, borsalino isn’t that special (it’s rather slow, the plot isn’t really exciting or surprising) but it’s still....something
Am I being objective? Probably not
I was excited to watch this, but the whole thing felt like a bit of a waste of these two actors. Given such an interesting topic, the film is pretty boring in parts, and the music completely negates the tone it was going for.
At least it brought Delon and Belmondo together - although the fact that they were both relentlessly bickering about who had more closeups, and then drafted up a contract to certify that they'd both receive an equal number of them, makes the film, and it's 4000 closeups, so more enjoyable to watch.
Meine Belmondo-Challenge möchte ich mit diesem Werk aus dem Jahr 1970 abschließen.
Borsalino vereint die beiden französischen Superstars Jean-Paul Belmondo und Alain Delon. Angesiedelt in den 30er-Jahren spielen Belmondo und Delon zwei Ganoven, die erst gegeneinander und dann zusammen gegen die Unterwelt Marseilles kämpfen.
Belmondo und Delon machen ihre Sache ausgesprochen gut. Die Mafiosi nimmt man ihnen ab. Auch das Marseille der damaligen Zeit muss sich hinter Chicago nicht verstecken.
Trotzdem hat mich die Story über weite Strecken nicht erreicht. Der Funke wollte irgendwie nicht überspringen und wenn es kurz davor war, wurde ich von der nervigen Charleston-Musik*, die ständig zu hören war 🙄, wieder auf den Boden der Tatsachen geholt.
* Ich gehe einfach mal davon aus, dass die Katzemusik Charleston war 😜
