I am extremely afraid of giant Agumon
Nothing quite beats revisiting a piece of media you have nostalgia for, only to realize it's even better than you remembered it to be.
I love Digimon Adventure's emphasis on friendship and childlike wonderment. I love how it could make me cry from both sweet and sad moments. But, most of all, I love being back amongst the Digital Monsters and transported right back to my childhood.
While Pokemon will always be the more beloved and popular franchise, I’ve always adored Digimon. Probably because I watched the Digimon Movie seemingly daily as a kid. Had a ton of the toys too. My childhood rocked.
This is my first time seeing the uncut first segment of the Digimon Movie, and I’ve got thoughts.
It’s not fair to compare it to the recut/redubbed version that had Fatboy Slim on the soundtrack, but it’s impossible for me not too. They are night and day, almost everything was altered for the Americanized version, from the music to the dialogue to the tone itself. This has none of the noise that the recut has,…
Who would have thought you can change so much while dubbing something as short as this. I mean this is only 20 minutes long, but they changed nearly all the dialogue, the entire soundtrack, and the whole tone of the movie. I grew up with the dubbed versions of this, and I just watched the original for the first time, so I'm used to the English and German versions, and I love them, but still... that kinda sucks.

Cute, but also a bit weird if you're used to the English version.

The blissful simplicity of childhood.
Walking through a city at night,
Ravaged by monsters.
Such is life.
Solamente quiero amarte y todo mi corazón brindarte... Te haré olvidar, esas penas que te hace mal...
As often cloying as Hosoda's work can be, any instance where a child cries or is in distress in one of his films activates a sleeper cell in my brain that makes me instantaneously cry. I'd forgotten just how much I care about Digimon until I watched this. I don't fully wanna commit to this perspective but I almost feel like Digimon is the Silent Hill to Pokemon's Resident Evil, in that it's less refined in a technical sense and less popular, but with that comes more room to really play with emotion, drama, and characters in a way not allowed within the framework of a needs-to-be-as-profitable-as-possible counterpart.
"You're never quite the same after your first Digimon."
Hello my Digital friends, welcome to the Digimon marathon. Courtesy of the Discotek Media uncut redub of the original 3 Adventure centric films. I preordered this as IMMEDIATELY as possible and have been super psyched to watch ever since. This original feature penned by Hosada feels entirely disconnected from the other material due to the enigmatic approach to the creatures and their influence on the real world. It's really compelling and kind of enrapturing how quickly Koromon goes from cuddly little facehugger to a badass parrot obliterating dinosaur. It's everything the kid in me could ever want honestly. It's brisk, it's light, it's cute. The Butterfly needle drops…
Mamoru Hosoda does some really remarkable in 20 minutes. He creates a kaiju and has it complete an epic battle, while also having emotional elements and intrigue while being tasted to essentially create a prequel film to a television franchise that has not started production. And without the world being introduced to Digimon and him not having time to really establish lore the way the television show would drop exposition-based monologues, he immediately establishes that Digimon change forms rapidly and are connected through their intense relationship with their partners. And although the tone is different than the show this precedes, this feels right in line with Hosoda’s other films and that in itself is an accomplishment.
